Message from Executive Director

I feel a real buzz when I walk into the AMSC offices. Building on the years of growth and development of industry sectors, AMSC is busier than ever.

We support more than 235,000 Manitoba workers and over 7,000 Manitoba employers. In 2010, nearly 16 thousand people came through our doors, sharing ideas, information and resources through committees, seminars and workshops.

I’m very proud of two new career and workforce programs underway: Workplace Integration of Skilled Newcomers in the Trades (WISNIT) and Manitoba Mentors. WISNIT has already connected participants with jobs in their fields, while filling gaps in Manitoba’s skilled trades sector. Manitoba Mentors has developed a network of mentors who will help youth find work experience and meaningful career options here in their home province, while allowing employers to connect with motivated young workers.

There’s a buzz in Manitoba, too, driven by innovation, entrepreneurial energy, creativity and passion. Every day I hear news about the inspiring achievements of our sector councils. Our artists have taken Paris by storm. Home-grown stars like Adam Beach shine in Hollywood. Our award-winning music industry has developed a groundbreaking aboriginal music program. Our northern polar bears and beluga whales are international eco-tourism draws. New construction is booming. We’re one of the fastest-growing aerospace hubs in Canada. Cutting-edge biotech companies are getting global attention. We’re moving ahead with sustainability and environmental initiatives. We’re building new landmarks like the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. (And the Jets are back!)

Manitoba businesses are strengthening their workforces, forging new connections, and creating economic and social opportunities, here and beyond our borders. On behalf of AMSC, I am very excited to be part of the positive momentum in Manitoba.
