The Art of Collaboration: Success through Synergy is an 18-hour training program and capacity-building initiative designed to increase individual and organizational ability to initiate, foster, maintain and fulfill multi-party collaborative relationships and partnerships. It is being offered in response to needs identified by individuals and organizations who are both creatively inspired to collaborate, as well as being encouraged by funding bodies, audiences, and various stakeholders to do so. These collaborations take place across organizations, for different purposes, with various time-frames, and at many different levels. As increasing numbers of not-for-profit organizations compete for funding, sector leaders and workers need to learn how to access new funders and broaden their resource and talent pools through partnerships and collaborations.
The Art of Collaboration - SUCCESS THROUGH SYNERGY course will help the people in your organization:
- Achieve your organizational goals through the synergy of collaborations
- Negotiate mutually beneficial, sustainable working relationships
- Work together to gain competitive advantages
- Mobilize community resources and promote arts-community development, effectiveness, and cohesion
- Build ties across sectors with business
- Strengthen partnerships with other arts/cultural organizations
- Maximize opportunities and minimize duplication of services
- Access and leverage new financial support and buy-in from funders
Course Content:
- Defining Collaboration: It's all about the relationship
- Initiating a Collaboration: Being a partner, and choosing a partner
- Co-Creating a Vision: Joint planning
- Sharing the Risks & Responsibility: Managing expectations & differences
- Sharing the Power: Joint decision making
- Sharing the Success: Recognition, rewards & providing closure
- Engaging Community: The powerful role of the arts
- Additional Resources & Support Material
This course counts towards these programs for credit: Red River College Volunteer Management Certificate Program (18 credit hours); The University of Winnipeg Division of Continuing Education’s Manitoba Arts and Cultural Management Program (14 credit hours Edge Seminar); Resolution Skills Centre Certificate program.

Associate Trainer, Resolution Skills Centre, A Program of Mediation Services
Sue Hemphill is the owner and principal consultant with Healthy Hive Consulting for organizational and community development. She is a long time Associate Trainer with Resolution Skills Centre and sessional professor at the University of Winnipeg / Menno Simons College in the Degree in Conflict Resolution. Healthy Hive’s projects and contracts include: training and development (coaching), mediation and facilitation, and innovative cross-sector program research and development. Sue’s theatre arts background has infused, informed and been integrated throughout her diverse career practice. Sue works as a consultant to various arts and social justice organizations, specializing in the arts-based social and community development, conflict resolution, leadership development, and human rights. Past employers include Winnipeg School Division, Society for Manitoba With Disabilities, Mediation Services, Manitoba Human Rights Commission, Manitoba Arts Council, West Broadway Development Corp. In addition to developing the leading-edge course on the Art of Collaboration – success through synergy, Sue will be working on developing a Human Rights Training Program for community-based organizations.
