Executive directors of sector councils and industry associations meet regularly to discuss HR management, funding issues, cross-sector collaborative projects and joint initiatives.
Liaison Network
Diversity, aboriginal and employer liaison officers and HR consultants meet for regular roundtable discussions on ways to help Manitoba businesses recruit, train and retain a strong and diverse workforce through industry-based education and development programs.
Manitoba Career Week Advisory Committee
This cross-sector committee works to raise awareness of Manitoba’s wide-open career opportunities. Initiatives include workshops and events to inspire, educate and mentor young people, as well as programs to aid workers in transition.
Career Week
- Participated in the opening ceremonies of Manitoba’s first-ever Career Week
Take Our Kids to Work Day
- Hosts an all-day event that invites parents to drop by with their Grade 9 children
- Uses information booths, online job exploration and fun hands-on activities to help kids connect with the working world, get a sense of Manitoba’s rich range of career opportunities, and develop a vision of their own futures
Career Information and Awareness Evening
- Hosts an event geared toward Manitobans in transition: people who are new to the province, re-entering the workforce, or searching for a second career
- Workshops are geared toward job search skills, résumé writing, interview preparation and networking tips
Opening Doors Parents’ Expo
- Holds an annual expo for parents to help their kids get a head start on the path to rewarding work
- Uses interactive displays to engage and inform young people about career opportunities in Manitoba
- Distributes a free Parents’ Career Planning Tool Kit CD-ROM, which includes information on education and training programs, scholarships and financial aid, and government employment services
Speakers Bureau
Part of the Manitoba Mentors program, this network arranges for speakers from sector councils and from Manitoba business and industry to talk to schools, businesses and community organizations:
- Introduces students to career and training possibilities in Manitoba
- Connects employers with potential employees
- Generates goodwill and raises the profile of Manitoba companies within the community
Training & Development Working Group
With representatives from each AMSC member organization, this working group helps coordinate cross-sector development programs for member employees:
- Coordinates Training on Thursdays (TOT) professional development workshops
- Allows member organizations to maximize funding dollars through shared training programs and professional development initiatives
- Encourages member organizations to pool resources, knowledge and best practices
- Helps member organizations network with each other and with other regional and national organizations
Regional Roadmap
The Alliance of Sector Councils has commissioned AMSC to steer the Manitoba portion of this national workforce development project. AMSC researches and reports on:
- Services that help companies recruit, assess, select, train and retain internationally trained employees
- Programs that offer settlement services, wage subsidies, language training, and workplace diversity and multiculturalism initiatives
